Attendees will learn about the “whole” child with special needs from a parent’s perspective. This discussion will include the mental, social, physical, emotional, and spiritual part of the child, as well as their parents and siblings.  The speakers will talk about their personal experiences raising one child with special needs and one typical child.  Information on community-based resources will also be discussed.

February’s JeTSetter’s program featured a presentation on the history of Jewish Pirates.

The story begins with the Spanish Inquisition of 1492 when Jews were forced to convert to Christianity, flee Spain or die.  Over the next 300 years a few Jewish men felt that they had a mission to avenge the injustices done to “their people”.  Piracy became their way of exacting some revenge and also making a profit.  Samuel Pallache the Pirate rabbi, Jean Lafitte the Robin Hood pirate, and many more became heroes and legends in their own time but then time forgot who they really were and what they stood for….until now!

TJFS completed the first of four quarterly Counseling Department Client Satisfaction Survey for 2010.   It was administered to each client who came to the office for their appointment in the month of January.

• Sixty-nine percent reported much improvement in their ability to understand and manage their emotions now; compared to before they began therapy.

• Sixty-five percent reported much improvement in their insights about themselves and their problems now; compared to before they began therapy.

• One hundred percent experienced improvement in their ability to cope with their problems now; compared to before they began therapy.

“Great counseling to cope with the problems that have occurred. (Therapist name) is a great help.”

“My sessions have improved my quality of life. Thank you.”

“I feel stronger and better about asserting my need to take care of myself.”

“TJFS is a wonderful service. I am deeply indebted to the kindness from (Staff name) and to (Therapist name). Thank you for being here.”

When they arrived, each volunteer, ranging in age from 8 to 72, sorted their donations according to specific categories in order to create balanced food distribution bags.  Then, they took empty bags and gathered the necessary items for senior, family or for our emergency food bags (we keep on hand for those who call in desperate need).  It was a huge success.

Here are just some of the comments from the volunteers:

“This was the first time we volunteered for a charity event as a family.  It was a great feeling to work as a team!  We would like to come again.  Thank you for this opportunity.”

“Our kids realized that there are people out around us that have a need for food.  They feel like they helped to make a difference in someone’s life.  (written as told by 8 year old!)”

“We loved the opportunity to help the community.  It’s wonderful to see what people can accomplish if they care and work together.  I am impressed with your organization.  Thanks.”
