On Sunday, January 31st Tampa Jewish Family Services participated in the “Give a Day- Get a Disney Day” involving over 130 volunteers from around the Tampa Bay Area. The experience called, “Collect, Sort, and Bag for our Community Food Bank.” Each volunteer was instructed to collect at least 20 non-perishable food items from neighbors, friends and family. On Sunday, each volunteer brought in their donations. Some collected by going around their neighborhood with a red wagon asking door to door, some set up food donations at their office and others bought food to bring in.

When they arrived, each volunteer, ranging in age from 8 to 72, sorted their donations according to specific categories in order to create balanced food distribution bags. Then, they took empty bags and gathered the necessary items for senior, family or for our emergency food bags (we keep on hand for those who call in desperate need). It was a huge success.

Here are just some of the comments from the volunteers:

“This was the first time we volunteered for a charity event as a family. It was a great feeling to work as a team! We would like to come again. Thank you for this opportunity.”

“Our kids realized that there are people out around us that have a need for food. They feel like they helped to make a difference in someone’s life. (written as told by 8 year old!)”

“We loved the opportunity to help the community. It’s wonderful to see what people can accomplish if they care and work together. I am impressed with your organization. Thanks.”
