Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean and their Cohorts
February’s JeTSetter’s program featured a presentation on the history of Jewish Pirates.
The story begins with th
e Spanish Inquisition of 1492 when Jews were forced to convert to Christianity, flee Spain or die. Over the next 300 years a few Jewish men felt that they had a mission to avenge the injustices done to “their people”. Piracy became their way of exacting some revenge and also making a profit. Samuel Pallache the Pirate rabbi, Jean Lafitte the Robin Hood pirate, and many more became heroes and legends in their own time but then time forgot who they really were and what they stood for….until now!
JeTSetters is a program for seniors. It is done in partnership with Tampa JCC. Click here for more.
